Writing a resume

A resume is a concise account of your experience, education, interests and skills.

Points to remember:

  • Include all relevant information under major headings
  • Keep it brief and to the point
  • When you give someone’s name as a referee, always let that person know before sending your resume
  • Type your resume and check your spelling. The more professional it looks, the better
  • List your most recent experience or educational results first

Writing a cover letter
Covering letters should be short and to the point. Most of the detail should be in your resume.

Points to remember:

  • Find out the name of the person the letter should go to
  • Specify what you are applying for – there may more than one job available
  • Include relevant contact details so they know where to find you
  • Type the letter and check your spelling


Preparing for the interview

What to bring
Bring a Job Folder which includes your current resume and any material that you feel would be important in the interview, eg school reports, work experience reports, references, qualifications, photographs or samples of your work, your birth certificate and any awards you may have.

Photocopy important items to leave with the employer.

Also bring a list of questions that you would like to ask at the interview, eg where will I be working? What does the position involve?

General points to remember:

  • Be punctual
  • Dress neatly
  • Be confident and enthusiastic
  • Before the interview think about the questions you could be asked and prepare your answers
  • If possible try to find out what the Host Company does or makes as this will assist you in the interview
