Technology Cadetship
The Technology Cadetship is an exciting new training and employment opportunity which combines both the general and technical skills required for working as a para-professional in the modern manufacturing industry.

A Technology Cadetship gives you the opportunity to earn while you learn your way to a highly skilled and challenging career in competitive, innovative and hi-tech business environments.

What kinds of career opportunities are available with the Technology Cadetship?
There is a range of career opportunities available to reflect the diverse skill needs of manufacturing enterprises. The initial range of career options include:

  • Drafting and Design - It covers both CAD (computer aided drawing) and traditional drafting principles as well as electives in information technology and manufacturing processes and operations. On finishing, you could be employed in a range of roles such as a Detail Draftsperson or CAD Operator.
  • Manufacturing Process Management - It covers industrial engineering, production planning, supervision, and teamwork principles. The opportunity to take units in related skills such as information technology is also included. On finishing, you could be employed in a range of roles such as a Production Planner, Estimator or continue through further on and off the job study to a management role.
  • Research and Testing - It covers monitoring and evaluating a range of manufacturing processes and products. The opportunity to take units in related skills such as information technology and planning is also included. On finishing, you could be employed in a range of roles such as a Junior Scientific Officer or Technician.
  • Technical Fields - It can cover quality control, non-destructive testing, design and development work (for example, prototypes and specifications) and many other areas. This option is designed to provide a combination of manufacturing based skills as well as specific technical knowledge. Specialist skills can be selected to suit the specific business sector. On finishing, you could be employed in a range of roles such as Quality Control Officer or Non-Destructive Testing Technician.

Are there any prerequisites?
While there are no formal academic requirements, Year 12 is generally considered to be a minimum. Subjects considered advantageous to commencing a Technology Cadetship include Maths, Science, and Design and Technology.

What do I get when I finish?
On successful completion of a Technology Cadetship you will be awarded a Nationally Recognised Certificate III or IV in Manufacturing Technology (depending on the level of training undertaken). In addition you may be offered permanent employment with your employer in a para-professional role suited to your Technology Cadetship career pathway.

What will I be paid?
You will be paid a cadetship wage based on the relevant Award (the Manufacturing and Associated Industries - Skills Development - Wages and Conditions Award 2004) and you will be eligible for sick leave and holiday pay.

When will Technology Cadetship positions be available?
The Technology Cadetship is being piloted in selected regions in NSW, VIC, QLD, and SA. It will become more widely available across all regions throughout the year.

What are the future directions for the Technology Cadetship?
The Technology Cadetship will provide you with an excellent foundation for an interesting, exciting and rewarding career in modern manufacturing industries. In the future, you may progress to higher level cadetship qualifications at Certificate Levels V and VI (Diploma and Advanced Diploma), and may also gain credit for entry into Engineering Degree programs.
