An apprenticeship is a work based training program.
If you want to undertake an apprenticeship you must sign a Training Agreement for a period of three to four years (depending on the trade). This agreement requires that you complete a TAFE course (equivalent to one day a week) while on the job. However, the final year of an apprenticeship is usually spent solely on the job.
No experience necessary While there are no formal academic requirements, Year 10 is generally considered to be a minimum. Some of our Host Companies, the companies that AiGTS will place you with for the duration of your apprenticeship, set their own academic criteria which may require a Year 11 or even Year 12 pass with good results in maths and science. All manufacturing jobs require some basic mathematical ability and you will be required to sit and pass a mechanical aptitude and mathematical test. To be eligible for an apprenticeship you must not hold a recognised Trades Certificate or Tertiary Qualification.
What do I get when I finish? In addition to the valuable skills acquired on the job, on successful completion of an apprenticeship you will be eligible to receive a Trade Certificate III. This can provide you with a pathway to the Diploma and/or Advanced Diploma, or professional qualifications at university. Plus, you will be earning while you are learning.
Too old for an apprenticeship! Most apprentices are employed straight out of school, however our Host Companies are also increasingly looking at older people to take on as apprentices and trainees. Older employees can bring a maturity to a position that a young person just doesn't have. However, you are never to old, or too young to apply.
What will I be paid? You will be paid an apprentice wage, based on the relevant Award and you will be eligible for sick leave and holiday pay.

What is a traineeship?
A traineeship is a work based training program.
Trainees must sign a Training Agreement for a period of one to two years. Training may be totally on the job or combine on and off the job programs. Trainees can be of any age, may already hold a qualification and can be employed on a full-time or part-time basis.
Do I need any qualifications? While there are no formal academic requirements, Year 10 is generally considered to be a minimum.
What do I get when I finish? In addition to the valuable skills acquired on the job, on successful completion of a traineeship you will be eligible to receive a Certificate I, II, or III, which are nationally recognised qualifications. These certificates can provide you with a pathway to further professional qualifications.
What will I be paid? You will be paid a trainee wage based on the National Training Wage Award and you will be eligible for sick leave and holiday pay.
